About the Speaker

Nine year-old Veronica’s fourth grade teacher knelt in front of Veronica’s tiny child’s desk, handed her back an essay, and told her, “You’re going to be a writer.”

In sixth grade, Veronica’s reading teacher struck out half of the words, because they didn’t quite match what the other kids had done. Her ninth grade English teacher would save Veronica’s papers for last—because she said they were always entertaining. Her twelfth grade teacher graded her on length. “I don’t really understand you, but I know others will.”

Veronica has yet to finish her book (believe it, she’s started), but she’s been biding her time as an advertising copywriter. She’s worked for gigantic, well known agencies, small shops, and even client side. It was mostly freelance, because stability is a myth, she says.

Over the last few years, she’s spent the majority of her time trying to keep her and her husband’s brewpub, Vector Brewing, alive. An unsolicited word of advice: Don’t start a small biz during a global pandemic if you can avoid it.

She can’t help but to create things, and she doesn’t always know how to stop, which is why the topic of endurance feels so natural in her hands.
